Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Late 1970’s.
Local rock band ‘The Sons of Beaches’ decide a name change is in order to reflect their by now mostly original repertoire. They trawl deeply philosophical tomes such as Spike Milligan’s ‘Puckoon’ for inspiration but settle on ‘El Pifco’, after the character Jesus El Pifco from John Lennon’s religious text, ‘Spaniard in the Works’. It is only later realised that the mischievous Lennon had appropriated that name from a brand of personal vibrator.
Travel to their many gigs in Sydney, the major metropolis some
80 kilometers to their north, meant a dangerous drive past the Lucas
Heights Nuclear Facility on its outskirts. With the memory of the then
recent Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Plant in Pennsylvania
fresh in their minds, the lads set about lining their band’s Kombi van
with lead and tinfoil to preclude possible contamination with
radioactivity. Mind you, radio activity is precisely what they wanted for
their new vinyl single release “Meltdown”, inspired by thoughts of
nuclear catastrophe mixed with a longing for sexual congress.
The song, written by lead singer and rhythm guitarist Hank Vann, was
released on an EMI Custom vinyl pressing in 1979. It had been
recorded on 4-track in the Coledale Surf Life Saving Club. El Pifco
were, Peter Clarke on drums, Bruno Konig on lead guitar and vocals,
Rod Ward on bass guitar and Hank Vann on rhythm guitar and lead
vocals.
